OpenAI rolls out ‘ChatGPT for teens’ amid wave of child safety lawsuits

OpenAI is rolling out a new “ChatGPT for Teens” experience featuring additional safety protections, including break reminders, “Quiet Hours,” “Study Hours,” and safeguards preventing the chatbot from expressing personal feelings toward users.

Users identifying as under 18 will automatically receive protective settings, with AI also used to estimate ages regardless of listed birthdates.

The move comes as OpenAI faces multiple lawsuits alleging ChatGPT contributed to the harm or deaths of young people, including a Florida lawsuit and a case involving a Massachusetts teen charged with murdering his mother and brother, according to CNN.
