Outrage and appeals for mercy mount after Madonna University expels “Gen Z” nursing student for viral video
ELELE, RIVERS STATE — Madonna University, Elele Campus, has faced widespread scrutiny following its decision to expel a final-year nursing student, Mercy, and suspend 14 others over a viral TikTok video captioned: “No fall sick o, na Gen Z full hospital now.”
The controversy has sparked intense debate over whether the sanctions are overly harsh, with student associations and health influencers pleading for the university to pardon the students. The Nigerian Universities Nursing Students’ Association (NUNSA) and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have both launched appeals urging management to reconsider.
NUNSA stated that it has initiated talks with relevant authorities, adding: “Our primary objective is to seek a fair, just, and favourable resolution by adequately representing the interests and welfare of the affected students.”
NANS President Akinteye Afeez similarly appealed to the institution’s management for clemency, noting the catastrophic impact of expulsion on a student’s final year. “An expulsion at this stage could have a lasting toll on their academics, their future careers, and their mental and emotional well-being. Rather than expulsion, we appeal that the students be issued a stern letter of warning,” the student body urged.
Public reaction remains divided. While critics argue the video mocked the healthcare profession, supporters contend that expulsion is excessive after years of academic sacrifice. Medical influencer Nurse Girma noted, “I know what has happened has happened, but I want to appeal to the school to temper justice with mercy; when it came to me that she is a 500-level student, it really melted my heart.”
According to PUNCH, Madonna University’s management plans to release an official response on Monday.
