Peter Obi can never be South-East’s best presidential candidate — Umahi

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has declared that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi cannot be regarded as the South-East’s best presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.

Speaking during an interview with ARISE News on Friday, Umahi accused Obi of failing to consult regional political leaders before contesting the 2023 presidential election.

According to Punch, the former Ebonyi governor defended South-East politicians supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“Peter Obi is not the best of our finest in South East. He’s not the best, he can never be the best,” Umahi said.

“You cannot play politics in South East without consulting people like us,” he added.

Umahi maintained that presidential ambitions involving the region required consultations with governors and other stakeholders.

“If I were contesting, I would have consulted,” he said.

He insisted that other qualified politicians existed within the South-East, questioning suggestions that Anambra State should automatically produce Nigeria’s president if power rotates to the region.
