Police clear the air on IGP’s remarks over filming officers
Force spokesman Aliyu Giwa made the clarification in posts on X, according to The Nation, stressing that Disu’s comments had been misinterpreted and that police were not seeking to shield officers from accountability. Giwa distinguished between responsible documentation and filming officers for entertainment, saying legitimate recordings could protect both citizens and officers.
He confirmed body cameras were under consideration as part of broader accountability efforts. The clarification followed criticism after Disu earlier described being filmed for social media skits as “very, very demoralising,” and comes after a March court ruling affirming citizens’ right to record police in public.
