Rayan’s late header denies Australia famous victory over Brazil

Australia were denied a famous victory against Brazil after Rayan scored a dramatic 95th-minute equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw in Queensland on Friday. According to The Independent, Tony Popovic’s side produced an impressive performance against Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil, who were playing their first match since the World Cup.

Australia created several promising opportunities in the opening half, with Nestory Irankunda, Conner Metcalfe and Aziz Behich causing problems for the visitors. Brazil thought they had taken the lead through Estevao, but the goal was ruled out by VAR following a foul in the build-up.

Australia eventually broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when Irankunda brilliantly curled a free-kick into the top corner after Douglas Luiz had fouled Paul Okon-Engstler. The Socceroos defended resolutely and appeared set for victory, but Brazil rescued a point deep into stoppage time. Raphinha delivered a corner into the box and substitute Rayan rose highest to head home, leaving Australia to settle for a draw.
