Remi Tinubu calls for mental health patients’ inclusion in policymaking
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for the inclusion of people living with mental health conditions in decisions concerning healthcare policies and services.
According to The Nation, she made the call on Saturday while commemorating World Mental Health Day 2026, themed “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change”.
Mrs Tinubu emphasised that individuals who have experienced mental health challenges possess valuable knowledge that should guide healthcare policies and programmes.
“Their participation must extend beyond sharing personal stories to meaningfully influence the policies, services, and decisions that affect their lives”, she stated.
She also urged communities to eliminate discrimination and improve access to mental healthcare.
“Communities should listen to their perspectives more, challenge stigma, and promote accessible, community-based mental healthcare that respects the dignity, rights, and needs of every individual”, Mrs Tinubu said.
The First Lady stressed that recognising lived experiences would help build an inclusive healthcare system that respects human dignity and protects patients’ rights.
