Russian chess official dies of malaria after trip to Nigeria

Russian chess official Sergei Indeikin has died at 36 after reportedly contracting severe malaria during a work trip to Nigeria, according to Daily Post Nigeria.

Indeikin, an operational manager and delegate of the International Chess Federation, FIDE, travelled to Abuja for the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships held from August 1 to 8. FIDE announced his death on August 23, citing a “sudden illness” without confirming the cause.

However, Russian media, citing his mother, reported he developed severe malaria after returning home to Perm, with relatives and colleagues believing he was infected during his stay in Nigeria.
