SERAP urges Tinubu to investigate AI-generated photos, data manipulation in INEC voter register
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to order an independent probe into alleged AI-generated photographs and manipulated personal data in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s preliminary voter register, Tribune reported.
In a letter dated October 31, 2026, the group asked Tinubu to direct the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to investigate. This followed INEC’s October 27 acknowledgment that “many questionable registration records were identified and flagged for further examination and that the online publication does not reflect all ongoing data-cleanup activities.” SERAP said registration officers may have misused official access credentials.
SERAP said, “An internal review by INEC cannot substitute for the NDPC’s independent exercise of its statutory data-protection mandate.” SERAP cited concerns over data security and the 2027 elections. The group gave the government seven days to act, warning it would consider legal action. “If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider appropriate legal actions,” the letter added.
