Shearer baffled by Awoniyi red card as Brighton thrashed Coventry 5-0
Alan Shearer has questioned the red card shown to Coventry striker Taiwo Awoniyi during Brighton’s 5-0 Premier League win. The Nigerian forward was sent off in the 55th minute after catching Maxim De Cuyper with his elbow, with referee Tony Harrington’s decision upheld by VAR official Peter Bankes. Brighton, already 2-0 up through Charalampos Kostoulas and Malick Yalcouye, capitalised with further goals from Pascal Gross, Lewis Dunk and Yasin Ayari.
According to Sussex World, Shearer said he couldn’t understand what Awoniyi “was supposed to have done differently,” arguing his arm rose naturally while contesting the ball and questioning why VAR still opted for the harshest sanction after a lengthy review.
