Spain Coach and Real Madrid President attend funeral of Tenerife’s Jesús de Miguel
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente and Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez were among hundreds of mourners who attended the funeral of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel on Thursday following his death at the age of 30.
According to ESPN, De Miguel died on Tuesday after suffering cardiac arrest following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a second-division match on Monday. His Tenerife teammates travelled from the Canary Islands to attend the service in Navahermosa, central Spain, alongside representatives of the Spanish football federation.
“It is with deep sorrow and genuine emotion that we offer our condolences and our respect,” De la Fuente told reporters before the service. The town declared three days of mourning, with flags flown at half-mast.
De Miguel’s family thanked those who offered condolences but requested privacy, saying: “Jesús leaves a void that is impossible to fill, but also an immense memory in all of us who were fortunate enough to share our lives with him.” Spain’s National Police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter.
