Spain introduces temporary border checks on visitors from Italy
Spain will introduce temporary border checks on visitors arriving from Italy, escalating a dispute between the two EU countries following the recent mass migration crisis in Ceuta.
According to The Guardian, the checks will begin at midnight Saturday and remain in place until September 7.
Madrid’s move follows Italy’s decision to impose checks on third-country nationals arriving from Spain by air and sea. Spain had demanded Rome withdraw the restrictions, calling them discriminatory. Italy refused, citing national security concerns after tens of thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into Spain’s Ceuta territory.
