Sushi alert: 96% of tested tuna contaminated with parasites
Brazilian scientists have found that 96% of skipjack tuna in a recent haul were contaminated with worms, raising concerns over parasite risks in raw fish like sushi and sashimi.
Researchers from the Federal University of Santa Catarina examined 53 tuna and discovered roughly 1,600 worms in total, mostly in the intestines and muscle tissue eaten by humans, according to New York Post.
Experts stressed the importance of sanitary inspection and immediate removal of viscera. However, some researchers argue high parasite counts can actually signal a fish came from a healthy ecosystem rather than a contaminated one.
