President Bola Tinubu will host the Nigerian premiere of “MKO,” a new documentary chronicling the annulled June 12, 1993 election and the pro-democracy struggle it triggered, according to a report by PUNCH.

The premiere is scheduled for October 1 at the National Theatre, Lagos, coinciding with Independence Day, ahead of a nationwide cinema release the next day through Nile Entertainment. The film features former heads of state Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, and Abiola’s running mate, Babagana Kingibe, among others.

Produced by filmmaker Ose Oyamendan, the documentary draws on archival footage and interviews to trace MKO Abiola’s political journey and death in detention in 1998. It will also screen at American University in Washington on September 23 for a panel discussion on the annulment’s lasting legacy. The film had its world premiere in June at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival.
