Tinubu to Nigerians: You will pay less for transport in October

President Bola Tinubu has promised that Nigerians will begin to see measurable reductions in transportation costs from October 1, 2026, as part of the National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas Transit Programme being implemented in collaboration with state governors.

According to Daily Post, the commitment was disclosed in a statement by Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga on Saturday, providing an update on the CNG initiative.

“On August 27, I met with the governors of our 36 states, and we agreed on a clear objective. From October 1, more Nigerians should begin to see measurable reductions in transportation costs,” Tinubu was quoted as saying.

An implementation committee for the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme has been established under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, chaired by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, with work already underway to identify priority transport corridors and determine appropriate interventions.

Tinubu noted that the programme had become “even more urgent amid the current global energy crisis,” as petrol prices continue to rise across Nigeria, hitting N1,500 per litre in several northern states.

The October 1 deadline aligns with Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration, adding political significance to the administration’s transport cost reduction pledge.
