Tragedy as man dies trying to save toddler from Lagos well
A man has died while attempting to rescue a two-year-old child who fell into a domestic well in Abule Egba, Lagos State.
According to Daily Trust, the incident occurred on Tuesday at Paul Street, inward Agbe Road.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the toddler accidentally fell into the well, prompting a resident to descend in an attempt to rescue the child.
However, the man became trapped and was recovered dead.
“The gallant rescuer who attempted the rescue was recovered deceased,” LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
Emergency responders arrived following a distress call at 9:48am but could not retrieve the toddler due to excessive water and thick mud.
A specialist diver subsequently confirmed that the child’s body had sunk deep into the mud.
Only one shoe was recovered.
LASEMA expressed condolences to the affected families and urged residents to secure domestic wells and avoid dangerous rescue attempts without professional assistance.
