Trump proposes renaming New Mexico ‘New America’
US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming New Mexico “New America,” prompting immediate opposition from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.
According to Tribune, Trump made the proposal Sunday on social media, saying the new name would be “more prestigious and beautiful.” The White House amplified the suggestion by reposting an image showing “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America.”
Grisham rejected the proposal, saying the state’s name “isn’t up for debate” because it predates the United States. She also accused Trump of distracting Americans from pressing concerns, including rising petrol prices. The proposal follows Trump’s recent push to rename other geographical features.
