TUC rejects ₦70,000 wage relief, demands higher salaries
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has rejected the Federal Government’s proposed ₦70,000 monthly wage award, insisting that the government can afford to increase the salary of the lowest-paid worker to ₦300,000.
According to Vanguard, the union described temporary wage awards as inadequate amid worsening economic hardship.
In a statement signed by its President-General, Festus Osifo, and Secretary, Nuhu Toro, the TUC demanded permanent salary increases and improved social protection.
“Our position is unequivocal: workers are not asking for favours; they are demanding social and economic justice that protects their dignity and livelihoods.”
The union criticised the government’s failure to fully implement previous wage awards, revealing that some workers were still owed outstanding payments.
It also demanded implementation of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) Agreement.
The TUC maintained that salary increases should not be delayed pending minimum wage negotiations.
It said further action would depend on the outcome of scheduled government talks.
