Make Biology a core subject in secondary schools, Reps urge education ministry
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Ministry of Education to restore Biology as a compulsory subject in senior secondary schools across Nigeria.
According to PUNCH, the lawmakers adopted a motion sponsored by Ibrahim Isiaka (APC, Ogun) during Wednesday’s plenary.
Isiaka expressed concern over the removal of Biology from the compulsory subjects listed in the revised curriculum.
He warned that the decision could undermine scientific education and students’ understanding of the environment.
“The House is concerned that the removal of Biology as a compulsory and core subject will cause significant harm to the education standard of our students in their capacity to acquire knowledge that is universally acknowledged and to benefit themselves, society and humanity at large.”
The lawmakers also urged the ministry to introduce Spanish, German, Chinese and Russian into the curriculum to strengthen international communication.
Relevant House committees were directed to engage the ministry and report back within four weeks on implementation.
