Government labels El-Sayed a national security threat

US President Donald Trump and senior Republican lawmakers have accused Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed of posing a national security threat, raising concerns about his alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood.

According to investigative journalist Ken Klippenstein, Trump described El-Sayed as a “Jihadist” and “Muslim Brotherhood guy” while campaigning against him.

Republican candidate Mike Rogers also declared: “Abdul El-Sayed’s radical ideology is a threat to our national security.”

Senator Ted Cruz warned that El-Sayed could gain access to classified intelligence if elected, alleging he might share sensitive information with Muslim Brotherhood members.

Senator Tim Sheehy similarly raised “serious national security questions” about the candidate.

However, Klippenstein criticised the accusations as politically motivated attacks designed to undermine El-Sayed’s candidacy.

He argued that Republicans were shifting attention away from healthcare and affordability, central issues in El-Sayed’s campaign.

The journalist also noted that El-Sayed had consistently denounced the organisation Republicans accused him of supporting.
