Turkey school shooting: CCTV shows student carrying rifle before attack

At least 11 students were injured after a student allegedly opened fire outside a high school in Turgutlu, western Turkey, on Tuesday, September 22.

According to The Week, CCTV footage showed the alleged attacker carrying a hunting rifle near the school before the shooting. The suspect, reportedly a 15-year-old student, was later detained by police.

Turkey’s Justice Minister, Akin Gürlek, said 11 students were injured, with two reportedly in serious condition. The suspect’s parents and grandfather were also detained as authorities investigate how the weapon came into the student’s possession.

The motive remains under investigation, including allegations that the student may have experienced bullying.

The incident comes months after two school shootings in Turkey prompted authorities to strengthen security measures at educational institutions.
