UEFA, AFC and CONCACAF accuse Infantino of ‘deception’ over World Cup sell-off plan
FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing renewed pressure after UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF accused him of breaking trust over his abandoned plan to sell a stake in World Cup commercial rights. According to Reuters, the three confederations described the proposal as a “profound failure of judgement” and called for an independent review.
FIFA abandoned the plan after widespread opposition, with Infantino subsequently apologising to national associations over how it was developed. The latest confrontation adds to calls for Infantino’s resignation, while FIFA has accused critics of attempting to undermine his authority outside established electoral procedures. LaLiga president Javier Tebas has also declared that the “Infantino era is over”, intensifying the growing leadership crisis at FIFA.
