UK PM Andy Burnham loses father to Alzheimer’s at 86
United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s father, Roy Burnham, has died at the age of 86 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, according to a report by Peoples Gazette.
The development comes months after Mr Burnham revealed that his father’s condition meant he was unaware his son was about to become UK prime minister.
Mr Burnham, who has spoken about wanting to improve social care given his experience with his father, commended the skill, care and professionalism of UK care workers. His father’s death forced him to cancel engagements for Monday and Tuesday, including the TUC conference in Brighton.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch extended condolences, describing the loss of a parent as a profoundly painful experience regardless of age or preparation.
In his book Head North, co-written with Steve Rotheram, Mr Burnham had appreciated his parents’ role in his life.
