UK’s Burnham risks Trump backlash over new sanctions on Israel
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is preparing to impose new sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, a move that could further strain relations with U.S. President Donald Trump. According to Bloomberg, the measures are expected to include restrictions on trade involving settlement goods and possible sanctions against companies linked to settlement activity.
The move comes as Britain adopts a tougher stance toward Israel over settlement expansion and the humanitarian situation involving Palestinians. Burnham’s government is expected to announce the measures as early as Tuesday.
The decision could anger Trump, who has previously criticized Burnham’s government while maintaining strong support for Israel. Downing Street has nevertheless described Israel as an important strategic partner.
