UN urges global social media reforms after Meta child-safety deal
The United Nations has called for comprehensive reforms across social media platforms to better protect children online, following Meta’s multibillion-dollar settlement with US states.
According to the BBC, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said governments must act rather than wait for courts and technology companies to introduce safeguards.
He said Meta’s proposed measures, including daily time limits, night mode, age assurance and parental controls, aligned with UN recommendations but were not sufficient.
Türk urged platforms including TikTok and YouTube to adopt stronger protections, stressing that children should not have to wait for lawsuits to be safe online.
