US considers using ‘Mother of All Bombs’ against Iran
The United States military is considering deploying its largest non-nuclear bomb against Iran if President Donald Trump orders renewed combat operations amid the ongoing conflict.
According to Vanguard, military planners are examining the possible use of the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, popularly called the “Mother of All Bombs,” against Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities.
The proposed strikes come amid stalled diplomatic negotiations and growing domestic pressure over the war’s economic consequences.
However, officials have questioned the weapon’s effectiveness against heavily fortified underground nuclear installations.
“The MOAB is a massive information operation type weapon that is great for huge area clearance but not much else,” a source familiar with the plans told CNN.
“It is definitely not designed as a deep penetration warhead.”
Concerns have also emerged over potential civilian casualties from the weapon’s destructive capacity.
Washington has recently prioritised economic pressure over military operations, while Trump faces political challenges ahead of November’s midterm elections.
No final decision on deploying the weapon has been announced.
