A Nigerian migrant who successfully challenged deportation from Britain on human rights grounds has been jailed after raping a 19-year-old woman in Wales.

The Daily Mail reported that Gift Oladele, 24, attacked the teenager as she walked home after a night out in Wrexham on September 7, 2025.

Oladele initially offered to accompany the woman before grabbing her and forcing her into nearby woods. Recalling the attack, she said: ‘He was covering my mouth’. I was trying to get his arm off me, but he wasn’t budging. That’s when he raped me violently.

‘He asked me if it was the first time I had been raped. Pictures of my family kept flashing in my head because I thought he was going to kill me.’

The victim said Oladele struck her repeatedly and threatened to find her if she reported the attack. She nevertheless informed her parents immediately after reaching home, and police arrested Oladele the following day.

A jury at Mold Crown Court convicted him of rape and sexual assault in March. He was later sentenced to 17 years in prison, with an additional eight-year extended licence period.

Oladele had previously been jailed in 2022 for falsely imprisoning a woman in Manchester and was facing another rape allegation when the Wrexham attack occurred.

Authorities had sought to deport him after his earlier conviction, but an immigration tribunal ruled removal would disproportionately interfere with his right to private and family life.

The Home Office said it would continue seeking the earliest possible deportation of foreign criminals.
