‘We’re all internally displaced’ — Obi laments

Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has decried the living conditions of internally displaced persons at the Ramin Kura IDP camp in Sokoto State.

PM News Nigeria reports that Obi visited the camp after holding town hall meetings and consultations with groups across the state ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Obi, in a post on Wednesday, said the camp houses more than 1,000 displaced persons and lacks adequate toilets, a primary healthcare centre and a basic school.

“During my tour of the facility, I found it particularly distressing to see Nigerians crammed into makeshift shelters and thatched rooms, with some rooms housing as many as 10 persons,” Obi stated.

He called for improved conditions in IDP camps and an end to the insecurity responsible for displacement.

“I have always insisted that as long as even one Nigerian lives in an IDP camp, we are all internally displaced. Therefore, the government of today must work assiduously to make the temporary accommodation for our dear citizens living in these camps comfortable, while ensuring that all the underlying security issues that created these conditions in the first place are resolved, to enable them to return to their ancestral homes.”

Obi said the Sokoto visit was his 12th to an IDP camp nationwide.
