WHO confirms no active Ebola cases in Nigeria following patient’s evacuation
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said Nigeria currently has no active Ebola case following the evacuation of the patient previously diagnosed with the virus.
The development comes amid heightened surveillance and public health measures introduced after the confirmation of an Ebola infection in Abuja.
According to Premium Times, the WHO confirmed the development as health authorities continued efforts to prevent further transmission.
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Mohamed Janabi, said the patient, a Swiss diplomat’s wife, and her husband were evacuated to Switzerland for continued medical care and monitoring.
Health Minister Muhammad Pate described the patient as “clinically much improved, stable, conscious, communicating,” adding that she was no longer infectious.
The woman tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain on October 20 after arriving from Uganda.
“However, vigilance remains critical,” Janabi warned.
He said Nigerian health authorities would continue monitoring 52 contacts, while Switzerland would oversee the patient’s treatment and her husband’s follow-up.
The WHO commended Nigeria’s healthcare workers for their response.
