Nigeria now Ebola-free, WHO declares
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that Nigeria currently has no active Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of the country’s index patient to Switzerland.
According to DAILY POST, WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this Monday in a statement posted on X.
“Nigeria is now Ebola-free following the evacuation of the index patient to Switzerland,” Janabi said.
He explained that the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed her through the acute phase of infection.
“Nigeria would maintain close follow-up of 52 contacts, while Switzerland would assume responsibility for the continued management of the patient and monitoring of contact number 53, her husband,” he added.
Health Minister Muhammad Pate confirmed that the woman and her asymptomatic husband were evacuated Monday.
However, WHO stressed that continued surveillance remained essential to preventing further transmission.
Nigerian authorities will maintain monitoring of identified contacts.
