Jay-Jay Okocha — one of the most gifted dribblers in football history — has ended any ambiguity about where he stands in the greatest debate in the sport. The Nigeria legend chooses Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo, and his reasoning is both elegant and definitive, according to World Soccer Talk.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast with former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, Okocha was asked to settle the GOAT debate between the two icons. His verdict was swift: “Messi, Messi. Ronaldo is a special player, but he is for me a goal scorer. He can score 10 million goals. He is a goal scorer. It’s like Haaland — Haaland is a goal scorer.”

Okocha then elevated Messi to an entirely different category. “But Messi, Messi is on another planet. Messi is an art. Messi was born to play football. He’ll get ill if he doesn’t play football. He’s a genius,” the Nigerian icon said.

The distinction Okocha draws is not about statistics but about essence. He praised Ronaldo’s relentless work ethic, acknowledging that “he’s not the most gifted player” but has maximised every ounce of his talent. Messi, by contrast, operates on pure instinct. “When it comes to a natural gifted player, someone born to play football, someone that plays with ease, that doesn’t force anything, like it’s his playground — that is Messi,” Okocha said.

The former PSG and Bolton Wanderers maestro, who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and the 1996 Olympic gold medal with Nigeria, also revealed that the only player he places above himself in raw dribbling artistry is Brazilian legend Ronaldinho — his former Paris Saint-Germain teammate. “Maybe because I had the privilege to play with him, to really see his talent and appreciate it,” Okocha said.
