“Why should students pay acceptance fee after being offered admission?” — Kanayo O. Kanayo questions schools, government
Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has criticised the requirement for newly admitted students to pay acceptance fees in Nigerian tertiary institutions, questioning why candidates already offered admission should face another financial demand, TheNigeriaLawyer reported.
Kanayo spoke on The Honest Bunch, where he discussed the financial difficulties facing many Nigerian families. He said young Nigerians who have gained admission regularly ask him for help raising their acceptance fees. “Do you know sometimes some not-too-privileged Nigerians call you and say, ‘Uncle, I have not paid this acceptance fee. Can you help me?’” Kanayo said.
He also argued the practice raises questions about the commitment of educational institutions and government to making education accessible to Nigerians who have the academic qualifications but lack the financial capacity to meet multiple charges. He added that the additional payment could particularly burden families already preparing to pay tuition, accommodation and other education-related expenses. “So it’s a very hard situation we got ourselves into,” he said.
