‘Wish dem well’: Charly Boy celebrates daughter Adaeze’s engagement to female partner
Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy or Area Fada, has publicly celebrated the engagement of his daughter, Adaeze, to a woman — sharing a video from the ceremony on his Instagram page and asking followers to wish the couple well.
“My beautiful Princess and her Husband. Folks, wish dem well for me,” Charly Boy wrote alongside the video, describing his daughter’s female partner as her “Husband.”
Adaeze also announced the engagement independently on her own Instagram page, sharing a photograph with her partner and writing: “WE’RE ENGAGED!” She accompanied the announcement with the hashtag #mrsandmrs and an emotional message about their future together.
“Here’s to a lifetime of love, laughter, growth, and making beautiful memories together. I can’t wait for everything God has in store for us. Forever sounds even sweeter with you,” Adaeze wrote.
According to The Punch, the posts have generated significant reactions on Nigerian social media, with users expressing a wide range of views — from messages of congratulation to criticism — given that same-sex relationships remain criminalised in Nigeria under the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act of 2014, which prescribes up to 14 years imprisonment for same-sex unions.
Charly Boy, who recently published a tell-all memoir and has long been known for his unconventional and provocative positions on social and cultural issues, has several children including Adaeze, who has previously featured in public discussions about her family.
