Yamal using ‘clever’ tactic to boost Ballon d’Or hopes, says journalist

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has been accused of deliberately turning the 2026 Ballon d’Or debate into a direct contest with Kylian Mbappe. According to Barca Universal, French football journalist Walid Acherchour believes Yamal understands that narrowing the conversation could strengthen his own case for the prestigious award.

Acherchour suggested the teenager wants other leading contenders, including Ousmane Dembele and Harry Kane, pushed out of the spotlight. Yamal has given supporters plenty to discuss after scoring seven goals and providing two assists in his first six appearances of the season.

Barcelona have also publicly backed his candidacy, with Joan Laporta, Hansi Flick and Deco among those supporting the youngster. Acherchour believes Yamal’s impressive form gives credibility to his approach, although his comments represent an opinion rather than evidence of a deliberate campaign by the player.
