Zelensky defies Trump, vows to resume strikes on Russian oil refineries
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to resume attacks on Russian oil refineries, defying United States President Donald Trump’s demand to halt the strikes.
According to The New York Times, Zelensky disclosed his decision in an interview with the Financial Times published Thursday, amid growing tensions between Kyiv and Washington.
“That’s it. The block is out,” Zelensky declared, signalling an end to Ukraine’s temporary suspension of refinery attacks.
The Ukrainian leader criticised Trump’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing Putin as “real evil.”
“How can Trump be friends with him?” he questioned. “I think it’s a mistake.”
Zelensky also accused American military officials of threatening to withhold intelligence unless Ukraine stopped targeting Russian energy infrastructure.
Washington has denied restricting intelligence sharing or issuing such threats.
The dispute follows Trump’s agreement to import Russian diesel, which Ukraine argues could finance Moscow’s war.
European leaders largely backed Zelensky’s decision, although some opposed attacks on refineries amid continuing diplomatic tensions.
