24 die after drinking ‘Monkey Tail’ in Ondo community
At least 24 people have died in Odigbo, Ondo State, after allegedly consuming locally brewed alcoholic drinks known as “Monkey Tail.”
According to Daily Trust, the deaths occurred between September 3 and 7, prompting a state government investigation. Officials said preliminary findings suggested a possible link to locally produced alcoholic, herbal and ethanol-based drinks, although laboratory tests were ongoing.
The Odigbo Local Government chairman subsequently imposed a one-month ban on the sale and consumption of such drinks. Several other residents are reportedly receiving treatment in hospitals as authorities work to establish the exact cause of the deaths.
