’44 dead, 367 cases’: Zamfara declares diphtheria outbreak, extends school resumption
The Zamfara State Ministry of Health has recorded 44 deaths from a diphtheria outbreak affecting parts of the state, with 367 clinically suspected cases confirmed — prompting Governor Dauda Lawal to declare a public health emergency and extend school resumption by two weeks, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
According to Daily Trust, State Director of Public Health Dr Yusuf Haske confirmed that over 320 patients had been treated and discharged, while children aged six to ten were among the most affected demographic. Gusau Local Government Area recorded the highest number of cases, with four treatment centres established.
“Although the number of cases is still increasing, the number of deaths has reduced, and many patients are responding positively to treatment,” Haske said, urging residents to seek immediate medical attention upon noticing symptoms.
