Cameroon Knock out Super Falcons 1-0 in WAFCON quarter-final
Nigeria’s reign as African women’s football champions is over. The Super Falcons were eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday, according to Premium Times
Twenty-year-old Myriam Nyadjou Wamen unleashed a stunning long-range free-kick in the 19th minute that left Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie with no chance—one of the best goals of the entire tournament.
Nigeria came flying out of the gates, dominating possession and pinning Cameroon inside their own half in the opening minutes, but Cameroonian goalkeeper Michaely Bihina produced a spectacular performance, stopping virtually everything the Super Falcons threw at her.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s title defence and denied the defending champions a place in the semi-finals, while also costing them automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil reserved for the four semi-finalists. However, Nigeria’s World Cup road remains open — the Super Falcons will face South Africa in a play-in semi-final on Thursday, August 13, with victory guaranteeing them a spot in the inter-confederation World Cup play-offs.
