Reps demand immediate solution to Delta oil spill
The House of Representatives Committee on South-South Development Commission has demanded urgent action on gas seepage in Bille, Rivers State, and an oil spill affecting Odidi Community, Delta State, according to Punch Newspapers.
Committee Chairman Julius Pondi called the nine-month-old Bille crisis unacceptable, citing NOSDRA findings of hazardous gases including hydrogen sulphide and methane exceeding regulatory thresholds.
Officials said the seepage’s source remains unconfirmed but is likely biogenic, comparing it to Cameroon’s 1986 Lake Nyos disaster. The committee demanded comprehensive briefings and measurable resolution steps from relevant agencies.
