IBB: Civilians backed all successful coups in Nigeria
Former military president Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has declared that no successful coup in Nigeria’s history occurred without civilian involvement or sponsorship, revealing that wealthy civilians have historically played significant roles in military takeovers, according to THISDAY
Speaking in a birthday interview on Badeggi 90.1 FM in Minna as he turns 85 on Monday, IBB also revisited the 1985 coup plot against his government, recalling his initial disbelief over the alleged involvement of close friend and FCT Minister Mamman Vatsa.
“Initially, I found it difficult to believe reports linking Vatsa to a planned coup because of our long-standing friendship,” he said. Vatsa was subsequently executed.
