New MKO Abiola documentary set for October premiere in Nigerian cinemas
A new documentary titled “MKO,” chronicling the life of Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, will premiere in Nigerian cinemas on October 2, according to Vanguard News.
Directed by Ose Oyamendan and produced by American filmmaker Mark Jonathan Harris, the investigative documentary features testimonies from figures including former military leader Ibrahim Babangida, ex-head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, and American diplomats involved in the crisis.
Oyamendan described it as more than Nigerian history, calling it “a warning to the world.” Abiola died in detention in July 1998 after his widely-acknowledged election victory was annulled.
