Anglican Church suspends Archbishop Ibezim for six months amid N2bn land sale allegations
The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has placed Archbishop Alexander Ibezim of Awka Diocese, Anambra State, on six months’ compulsory leave following allegations concerning his administration.
According to PREMIUM TIMES, the church’s primate, Henry Ndukuba, issued the directive in a letter dated October 13, 2026.
Ibezim was barred from officiating church activities during the investigation.
Ndukuba explained that the decision would allow “a fair and thorough investigation” and promote reconciliation within the diocese.
He stressed that the leave was an administrative measure rather than a disciplinary sanction.
“We, hereby direct you to proceed on leave with effect from the date of this letter, for a period of six months, in the first instance, or such other reviewed periods we may consider,” he stated.
Bishop Samuel Ezeofor of Aguata Diocese was appointed to supervise Awka Diocese and coordinate the Province of the Niger.
The development follows allegations involving the unauthorised sale of church land worth ₦2 billion, which Ibezim’s representatives have previously denied.
