Xabi Alonso provides Emi Martinez injury update after Chelsea keeper taken to hospital
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that goalkeeper Emi Martinez was conscious when he was taken to hospital following a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. According to the Liverpool Echo, the Argentina international received treatment for around 10 minutes before being stretchered off during Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
Alonso told TNT Sports: “As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious.”Right now he is in hospital doing precautionary tests. Let’s see. That’s all I know so far.” Martinez was replaced by 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, who made his Premier League debut. Chelsea matchwinner Pedro Neto dedicated the victory to the injured goalkeeper, saying: “We are really pleased. Shame for Emi [Martinez] but we wish you all the best. This win is for him.”
