Scientists have named a newly identified plant species after Argentine football legend Lionel Messi in recognition of his global influence and sporting achievements.

According to Vanguard, the plant, scientifically named Salvia messii, was discovered in the Andes mountains of Peru by researchers studying the region’s biodiversity.

The aromatic shrub produces distinctive light blue and white flowers resembling the colours of Argentina’s national football team jersey.

Researchers said the species grows on rocky slopes at elevations between 2,000 and 2,400 metres above sea level.

The discovery was documented in the scientific journal Phytotaxa, highlighting the importance of identifying and protecting previously unknown plant species.

Scientists have also classified the plant as endangered because of environmental threats, including wildfires and prolonged droughts.

Messi, who captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has previously inspired the naming of several animal and fungal species.

The latest discovery adds another scientific tribute to the footballer’s legacy beyond the pitch.
