Don’t use Ebola outbreak to restrict political participation, influence 2027 elections — Sowore warns Tinubu
African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has warned against exploiting Nigeria’s Ebola outbreak to restrict political participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Daily Post, Sowore raised the concerns in a statement posted on X, questioning the government’s handling of the health emergency.
“I firmly believe he knows he cannot win a genuinely free and fair electoral contest,” Sowore said, referring to President Bola Tinubu.
He questioned communication between Nigerian and Ugandan authorities concerning an infected woman’s travel history, calling for greater transparency in disease surveillance.
Sowore also criticised the appointment of Femi Gbajabiamila to lead the Presidential Task Force on Ebola Preparedness, arguing that qualified health professionals should oversee the response.
“Public health must protect lives, not become an instrument of political control,” he said.
The politician urged authorities to prioritise effective contact tracing, medical treatment and transparent communication while protecting citizens’ democratic rights throughout the outbreak and upcoming electoral activities.
