Saudi Arabia executes two Bangladeshis, Dhaka demands explanation
Bangladesh has demanded an explanation from Saudi Arabia following the execution of two of its nationals in Mecca on October 14, 2026, without prior notification to Bangladeshi authorities.
The victims, Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, were convicted of alleged “indecent acts” inside a mosque.
Saudi authorities have not publicly disclosed the precise nature of the offences.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry expressed concern that neither its officials nor diplomatic mission received advance notice of the executions.
The government has requested details about the allegations, judicial proceedings and circumstances surrounding the sentences.
Bangladeshi officials also sought clarification concerning the victims’ identities and the whereabouts of their remains.
The matter was subsequently raised with Saudi Arabia’s ambassador in Dhaka through diplomatic channels.
Saudi authorities reportedly imposed the sentences under discretionary Islamic legal provisions.
The executions have raised concerns about transparency, diplomatic communication and the treatment of foreign workers facing criminal prosecution in Saudi Arabia.
