Doctors confirm Pope Leo requires no additional cancer treatment
Doctors treating Pope Leo XIV have confirmed that the 71-year-old pontiff requires no further cancer treatment following successful lung surgery.
According to The Epoch Times, the Vatican announced on Wednesday that medical examinations confirmed the cancer remained localised.
“A subsequent oncological evaluation has confirmed that no further therapy is required,” his surgeon, Stefano Margaritora, and physician, Luigi Carbone, said.
The pope underwent surgery on October 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after doctors discovered a cancerous tumour.
He was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 17 and has gradually resumed official duties.
Doctors confirmed that the tumour was lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of non-small cell lung cancer.
The cancer was reportedly discovered during a routine abdominal examination before symptoms developed.
Pope Leo made his first public appearance after surgery on October 18, thanking supporters for their prayers.
Doctors have also indicated that his upcoming South American trip can proceed as scheduled.
