Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney’s past relationship controversies have resurfaced as the ex-England striker celebrates his 41st birthday on Saturday. In a retrospective published by the Daily Star, Rooney’s alleged affairs and the challenges they created in his marriage to wife Coleen were revisited.
The report detailed allegations dating back to 2004, including claims involving sex workers and subsequent controversies that attracted widespread media attention. Rooney previously acknowledged visiting massage parlours and prostitutes, admitting:
“I now regret it deeply and hope people may understand that it was the sort of mistake you make when you are young and stupid.”
Further allegations emerged in 2009 and 2010, prompting Rooney to say: “My life is in ruins… I’ve been so stupid.” Coleen ultimately chose to continue their marriage.
Rooney later reflected on his past in an Amazon Prime Video documentary, saying: “There is stuff that has happened in the past, like things with girls for instance. It is stuff that I regret.” The former striker has since continued his career in football management and television punditry.
