Yoruba Nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Sunday launched the Iru Ekun Security Network in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, with about 20,000 volunteers reportedly joining the outfit, Punch reports.

The launch, held at Mapo Hall, came as Igboho explained his recent visit to Abuja, which he said was meant to strengthen the network and improve its operations across the South-West. A statement from his media office said the initiative was set up to strengthen community security and tackle crime in Yorubaland and parts of Kwara and Niger states.

The statement said Oyo’s launch followed similar inaugurations in Osun, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states. It added that the outfit has worked with the Nigerian Army, the Police, the Department of State Services and other agencies to curb abductions, killings and other insecurity, particularly in the South-West.

Igboho commended the turnout. “The impressive development represents a milestone which indicates the genuine interest of Oyo people in active participation to ensure the safety and security of residents, irrespective of tribe, religion and political affiliation,” he said.

He said his Abuja trip followed a call the previous night and was linked to his collaboration with the Olubadan of Ibadanland. “Iru Ekun is the brainchild of South-West traditional rulers, and it will continue to serve its purpose for the peace and effective security of our communities,” he said.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu “who provided this platform so that we can interact as Iru Ekun members.” He also urged Nigerians, including members of the network, to support Tinubu’s re-election bid and vote for the All Progressives Congress.
