Vincent Kompany discharged from hospital after health scare
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground, with the Belgian reportedly doing well following treatment.
The 40-year-old was taken to hospital last Friday after becoming unwell while watching the club’s second team train. The cause was identified as meningeal irritation, an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
“Given the circumstances, he’s doing well,” Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl told German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday. “He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.”
Kompany had been battling a virus before the incident and missed some training sessions. Bayern previously indicated that his return would take “weeks, not days”. English assistant coach Aaron Danks has taken charge in his absence, overseeing Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Freiburg.
According to BBC Sport, no timeline has been established for Kompany’s return to the touchline. Eberl expressed confidence that the former Manchester City defender would recover fully and resume his duties soon, as Bayern prepare to face Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
