Police arrest 48 outside U.S. embassy in London for supporting pro-palestine action group
Dozens of people were arrested at a protest outside the U.S. Embassy in London on Saturday in support of the proscribed group Palestine Action, police said, according to CBS News.
London’s Metropolitan Police said 48 people had been arrested, the majority for expressing support for a proscribed organisation. “Officers remain at the scene and are continuing to make arrests,” it said.
More than 100 people took part, many holding signs reading: “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.” Some protesters applauded and chanted “free, free Palestine” as people were taken away to police vans.
The U.K. government outlawed the group last year as a terrorist organisation. Membership of or support for Palestine Action is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
Demonstrators also held a vigil outside the U.S. Consulate in Edinburgh. No arrests were reported, but Police Scotland said inquiries were ongoing to identify people wearing T-shirts and holding banners showing support for the group. “Evidence is being reviewed and further action will be taken as appropriate,” it said.
The protests came before a Nov. 4 Supreme Court appeal against the group’s designation. Supporters say the ban is draconian and violates freedom of speech. In August, the U.S. government announced sanctions against Palestine Action, designating it a terror group.
